2 Tips for a Smoother Binding

The binding is the final touch that adds a beautiful accent to your quilt. A lovely straight and smooth binding adds a perfect touch of class. There are a couple of tricks you can use to help create a neat machine binding.

Keep tension on binding as you sew

The first technique is to keep slight tension on the binding strip as you’re sewing it to the quilt. Don’t stretch it way out, just keep it tight. This prevents fullness in the binding. Extra binding fullness can cause the binding to be wavy instead of nice and flat.

Press binding away from quilt and clip corner into place

The next step is pressing the binding away from the quilt after the first seam. Fold the binding over and clip in place around the corners. You can fold the entire binding over and clip it in place if you prefer, but I find that after I press the binding away from the quilt and clip the corners, I can easily fold the rest of the binding over and into place as I sew it down.
