Cutting Diamonds Tutorial

If you haven’t cut diamond quilt pieces before it might seem a little intimidating, but actually they are pretty simple. With the right tools diamonds are a piece of cake.

To cut a diamond piece with a ruler, make sure your ruler has a 45 degree marking. Start with a fabric strip the width of the diamond piece between parallel edges. Line the 45 degree line up with the bottom edge of the fabric strip. Cut along the edge of the ruler.

Make a marking the appropriate length of the diamond, then move the ruler to the marking and line up the 45 degree line with the edge of the fabric again and cut. There you have it - a diamond ready for sewing.

The second method of cutting diamonds is even easier! In our shop, we sell diamond templates. To use a template, start with the same strip of fabric, then line up the parallel edges of the template with the edges of the fabric strip and cut along the edges of the template. The corners of the template are cut off, and you have the option to cut the edges of your fabric diamond off along these lines to reduce bulk in your seams.

Eight diamond pieces all precisely cut and ready for piecing.
